Rare Problems

On rare occasions the M A Series III will give a clunking sound when a cutting operation is performed.

Solution :- oil your machine - see oiling

Also note:- Some new machines will make a whirring sound when the handle is moved up and down. This is not a problem and will go away after a few days of hard work.

On even rarer occasions, the machine may JAM DOWN. If this occurs, do not attempt to un-jam with the handle. Please do thre following.

360deg a couple of times

Please note :- The problem is the result of insufficient oil  and may occur on a new or used machine that has been sitting unused for quite some time.

Once un-jammed please oil well, and using the handle rotate the cutting head 360deg a couple of times then re-oil and repeat.

Also Note:- A new machine can also jam, To minimise the possibility, rotate as above before use for the first couple of weeks of service.

On brand new machines cut most work using the back part of the cutting board as shown below. Once the machine is fully "run-in" this cutting position should not be as important.

On older blue machines and early black (one part handle machines)

Please check and tighten  the top dial lock screws occassionally

When correctly operating, the top dial must remain still  when the head is spun from left to right .

Failure to keep the top scews tight  may sometimes cause the top-dail to lock to the head .

Lock up (top dial)

Caution :- If you have the latest machine ( with this (2 part) handle) New 2 part handle. the following text does not apply.

FOR EARLIER MACHINES BOTH BLUE AND BLACK WITH A FIXED ONE PART HANDLE

TOP DIAL GAP (CLUNKING ON HANDLE USE)

This is usually caused because the top dial grub screws have been allowed to loosen slightly.

Extreme Circumstance – Top Dial Lock-Up

Important:
This situation is rare and only occurs if the two grub screws in the top dial are allowed to become loose.

Under certain conditions, loose grub screws can cause the top dial to lock solid.

Cause

If the grub screws are not kept tight, the top dial may rotate under load and bind internally, potentially locking the mechanism.

Top-dial (exploded view)

(shown for clarity -- the screws never need to be removed.)

If the Top Dial Locks

Loosen the two grub screws

Turn anti-clockwise only 2–3 turns

Do NOT remove the grub screws

Attempt to rotate the top dial anti-clockwise by hand

If the dial will not move:

If force has previously been applied to the handle, the dial may be locked as tightly as a truck wheel nut

In this case, a plumber’s pipe wrench may be required to break the lock

Apply controlled force only — excessive force can cause damage

After the Dial Is Released

Tighten the top dial clockwise by hand only

Tighten to a light, soft finger-tight feel

Back the dial off anti-clockwise approximately ¼ turn

Re-tighten both grub screws clockwise --very firmly with the hex key

Check grub screw tightness regularly

This will prevent the issue from occurring again

Prevention

✔ Keep grub screws tight
✔ Check periodically as part of routine maintenance
✔ Never force the handle if resistance is felt
